How We Have Grown in Omaha
Free Farm Syndicate was started in 2017 by a small group of residents who believed a strong community-based free food system would uplift our vibrant community.
In 2017, FFS began growing in just two garden lots in South Omaha (Bancroft Street Market and City Sprouts South) and hosted one weekly distribution. Today, FFS organizes five gardens throughout northeast and southeast Omaha, supplying food for two distributions weekly June through October. In 2022, we grew more than two tons of produce and distributed more with our peers and partners. Our goal for 2023 is to increase our production, strengthen our distribution web, and expand the depth of our connections with our volunteers, partners, and community.
FFS is completely run by a core of dedicated volunteers with expertise in urban farming and community organizing of many facets. We come together and share our ideals for one another and offer it to the community that supports our vision of a sustainable and accessible food network. We could not succeed without the gracious giving spirit of our time and knowledge to one another. Free Farm Syndicate is always eager to meet and work with new volunteers, no matter your level of experience or dedication. Grow with us!
Sustaining Our Community and Our Environment
Free Farm Syndicate believes that food should be grown naturally, sourced locally, and given freely. Our hope is to grow food accessibility and sovereignty to our community.
FFS uses organic growing practices to not only produce healthier food to eat but to help support a healthy urban ecosystem. We integrate soil regenerative farming techniques, do not use pesticides or herbicides, and allow for natural and designed habitat for pollinators, native plants, and urban wildlife. We utilize recycled materials and tool sharing as a means of reducing our waste impact. FFS makes a point to research the lead soil levels of all of our plots, as well as encouraging safer urban farming practices for our volunteers.
